Jubilee Fuzz – The pedal to celebrate 35 years of Gitarren Total

For our 35th anniversary, we came up with something very special. In collaboration with Greuter Audio we have created an exclusive fuzz pedal.

This limited edition fuzz pedal has a unique sound and unparalleled features! Based on the Greuter Audio Moonlight, the Jubilee Fuzz features a classic 60’s, velcro sound with round bass and singing highs.

Compared to other silicon fuzz pedals, the Jubilee Fuzz has one key difference: the signal is split before the fuzz circuit and passes through a clean boost connected in parallel. So you hear the distortion and an adjustable amount of the clean signal at the same time. However, the “Clean” knob is not a simple mix knob, but effectively controls the output-level of the clean boost. This allows a distorted tube amp to be beautifully thickened and overdriven even more. Together with the parallel fuzz, apocalyptic fuzz sounds are created!

The Jubilee Fuzz is limited to 35 pieces and you can find it exclusively in our store at Aemtlerstrasse 15 in 8003 Zurich or directly in our online store from September 10th.

Here you can see the pedal in action. In the following video we show four of our favorite settings.

Fuzz with clean blend

A classic low-gain fuzz with a lot of clean content. With the Clean knob wide open, you can still hear the sound from the amp and most importantly, the guitar.

Clean Boost

The Jubilee Fuzz is also a perfect clean boost! If you turn down the Fuzz knob completely and set the Bias knob to the upper position, almost no fuzz signal can be heard. This setting is perfect to overdrive your distorted tube amp even more.

“Standard” Fuzz

The fuzz control is just before the last 10%. In this position, it is wonderfully saturated, but not yet at the limit. For heavy compression and distortion, just turn the Fuzz knob even further. We reduce the clean level for this sound to get the full taste of the fuzz-tone.

Gated

For this extreme setting, we have the Fuzz knob almost completely open and the Bias knob in the up position. The fuzz sound now has little sustain and extreme compression and an even more extreme noise gate. Fun!

History of the development

It all started at the beginning of 2022, when we brainstormed as a team to develop variants of what our anniversary year 2023 could look like. (This was also the approach that led to our successful “Live at the Guitar Store” concert week. You can find more information under this Link). The proposal to develop an exclusive anniversary product was quickly mentioned and we all agreed on the conclusion that it had to be an effect pedal.

We brought our friend of the house, Sascha Greuter, on board as a partner. Sascha has made a name for himself in the music scene in recent years with his excellent sounding effects pedals. Since 2016, he has been producing these with great care and attention to detail in his one-man business in Zurich.

Together we set ourselves the goal: We develop a fuzz pedal with familiar sound characteristics, lots of gain and with an unexpected feature. After the initial development sessions, Sascha got to work developing a prototype.

The first version was still made on a breadboard circuit. Sascha has experimented a lot with his “Moonlight” circuit. The Moonlight Fuzz pedal is based on the Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face, but has more gain and the ability to adjust the bias. This adds a dimension to the sound spectrum. The Jubilee Fuzz should additionally offer the possibility to mix the undistorted signal to it. After a lot of fiddling around, Sascha connected his booster circuit, as found in “Fokus Boost”, in parallel to the fuzz – with an amazing result!

When the circuit sounded broadly as we imagined it, the first prototype (simply mounted in the empty cabinet of an old Rocktron headphone amplifier) arrived. This version still came with a separate output for clean and one for fuzz. However, with the “less is more” approach, this idea was discarded.

The next and last prototype was visually very close to the finished product. Only small things, like the fine-tuning of tone and bias were necessary. And last but not least, of course, the elegant badge on the bottom of the pedal.

We have tested this latest version extensively in various situations and found it to be very good! At that time, we could hardly wait for Sascha to finally finish the 35 pieces.
